What is pigment?
Pigment is a dye that protects the skin from the UV radiation found in sunlight. When you are exposed to UV rays, the skin produces more pigment which causes the skin to tan. Too much exposure to UV radiation can cause various home conditions and makes the skin age faster. Also, too long exposure to UV radiation can disrupt pigment cells which causes pigment accumulation. This accumulation of pigment looks like a dark spot on the skin; a pigment spot.
Different types of pigment
We distinguish different types of pigmentation spots
Age spots
In middle age, everyone develops one or more dark spots on the skin. These age spots often appear in areas with high sun exposure, such as the hands, face, neck and décolleté.
Pregnancy mask
Pregnancy hormones can cause excessive production of pigment Which causes dark spots on the face and/or neck. These spots are harmless, persistent and can be very annoying. Once you have had pregnancy marker, you are very likely to have it again with the next pregnancy and remain extra sensitive to pigmentation.
Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
This form of pigmentation occurs in combination with acne, exposure to UV radiation has caused the fragile acne skin to produce additional pigment. These are often several small pigment spots across the face.
